About Fish Haven

Let’s talk geography. When you stay in Fish Haven, you’re:

Fish Haven lies on the west banks of the shimmering Bear Lake; a natural lake split in half by the Utah-Idaho border. On the other side of Fish Haven lies a stunning mountain range. The mountains slope into valleys, forests of endless sqft, rivers, and creeks.

It’s also not too far from Beaver Mountain Ski Area – a must visit for those visiting during ski season.

This town is a gem of nature, carefully and intentionally chiseled out to accommodate a small population of under 500 people.

The town doesn’t have its government; instead, the Bear Lake County Commission oversees and manages Fish Haven’s affairs. Residents either retired or retreated here to connect with the natural surroundings and each other in this mountain paradise.

Things to Do in Fish Haven

Oregon Trail Bear Lake Scenic Byway

Starting on US 89 in Fish Haven, you can follow this breathtaking scenic byway for 110 miles to look at the historic sites of the Oregon Trail around Bear Lake and beyond. Take the kids and enjoy the two-hour road trip.

Or if you have the time to enjoy it as a day trip , add some extra stops along the way. Stop by the explosive geyser (nature’s hot tub) or take a gander at some limestone caves.

Don’t get us wrong; you can make the drive any time of year. However, you might want to keep it short in the winter since the roads will likely be blanketed by snowfall.

Fish Haven Canyon Trailhead

The Fish Haven Canyon Trailhead is a lovely destination for snowmobile , mountain bike, and ATV enthusiasts. Imagine meandering down through rolling hills with sites of snow-tipped trees and shimmering sunshine peeking through the forests.

To the west, mountains stand tall and proud, welcoming your passing gaze of awe. Bring your own trail vehicle of choice. If you don’t have one? Hit up Bear Lake Funtime Rentals and Epic Recreation, both located in Garden City, UT, for some rentals.

Bear Lake West Golf Course

Fish Haven boasts its own nine-hole golf course — a well-managed establishment with friendly and helpful staff. The Bear Lake West Golf Course is relatively challenging, with elevation changes and sloping fairways.

Peppered on the borders sit endless trees and hills, creating a stunning backdrop for your next game. Spectacular lake views might catch your attention enough to interrupt your swing, but time flows slowly here in Fish Haven.

The restaurant has weekly specials, but we think Thursday’s shrimp + sirloin special is a killer reason to schedule a trip

Cooper’s brings in live music on the weekends and has outdoor seating in the warmer months. They also have a great kids’ menu if you bring along your small, picky eaters! Of course, you’ll also relish the joint’s many juicy burgers, from bison patties to mushroom-swiss combos.

With great food, service, and views, Cooper’s Restaurant and Sports Bar is easily on our list of must-eats while vacationing in Fish Haven.

Fish Haven Creek in Fish Haven, ID, attracts many seasonal visitors for a quiet fly fishing trip. However, before you put on your waders to head out into the peaceful waters, ensure you get a fishing license !

Stay on the lookout for rainbow trout, perch, and bluegill fish scampering across the water, most often during the early mornings. You’ll surely catch a few if you start your day around 4 or 5 am.

Gladys’ Place

Are you craving a deli sandwich? Maybe some juicy, sliced roast beef on a cheese bun with mustard, greens, and horseradish. Or perhaps you’re hankering for a simple ham and cheese grilled on a fresh bun. Custom sandwiches are one of the many fortes of Gladys’ Place — a town tradition.

The business is one of the great treasures of Fish Haven — a deli, convenience store, and liquor store all in one. When was the last time you could smell freshly baked bread at a convenience store?

The shop and staff are filled with local wisdom, wit, and charm. As of December 2022, Gladys’ Place is currently undergoing remodeling. They’ll reopen soon and focus even more heavily on the deli aspect of the business.

Grab a few car necessities and stock up on water and snacks, but make sure you try a delicious deli sandwich and ice cream scoop before you get back on Highway 89!

Imagine a 52-mile loop around Bear Lake and its gorgeous terrain — a mountain biker’s dream! The Bear Lake Road Biking Path calls out to you if you’re looking for a full-day athletic adventure around Bear Lake.

It’s open from Labor Day to Memorial Day, as the roads are dangerously busy in the summer months.

This whole loop offers spectacular views of the lake and surrounding mountains. In addition, there’s no need to carry much food or water. When you go through each town, you can stop for restrooms and replenish yourself at the smattering of restaurants and stores along the way. Just remember to wear a helmet.

About 10-15 minutes west of Bear Lake, in the direction of Logan, UT, make your way to the Wasatch-Cache National Forest. There, you’ll find the Sinks!

The Sinks is a limestone sinkhole that hosts the perfect place for tubing and outdoor adventure with your loved one or the entire family. You can sled, snowshoe, or even snowmobile at either Peter Sinks or Middle Sink.

FYI – Peter Sinks is a whopping 8,000-foot elevation, so it’s not for the faint of heart. You won’t be up in the Arctic, but the crisp, paralyzing air will certainly make you feel like it.

If you visited Bear Lake, you may have seen Beaver Mountain and the area’s other mountains from a distance. Bear Lake is known as the Caribbean of the Rockies because of the striking turquoise blue color of the water. Although the stunning mountain backdrop is certainly not something commonly seen in the Caribbean.

You may be awestruck when you first see the majestic mountain. This amazing landscape was crafted by volcanoes giving it a unique appearance. The entire area has a rugged natural beauty but the site of Beaver Mountain is the topping on the cake so to speak.

People gravitate to these mountains throughout the year, but during skiing season the area takes on an extra appeal. With over 1,000 acres of skiable space, there is something for the beginner skier and the seasoned snow adventurer. With 400 inches of annual average snowfall you should have plenty of fresh powder to enjoy.

People come from all over the world to enjoy “the Beav” as locals and regulars call it. Since its opening in 1939 , Beaver Mountain has hosted hundreds of thousands of skiers and snowboarders. Back in the day, skiers would park on the highway and hike a mile to get to the ski resort. Don’t worry! We won’t make you do that.

This family owned ski resort offers a friendly and welcoming environment along with those amazing views. It just might be the USA’s oldest family-owned ski resort. They offer a variety of choices including day passes, season passes, or an all-inclusive Indy Pass depending on how often you want to ski Utah.

When to Ski the Beaver Mountain

Beaver Mountain has a base elevation of 7,100 feet and a summit elevation of 8,800 feet. With 48 runs it is perfect for the new skier, seasoned skier, and for everyone in between who likes to hit the slopes. Over 35% of the area is suitable for beginners and 40% for intermediate skiers. The 828 skiable acres offer plenty to explore. The vertical drop is 1,700 feet which offers plenty of thrills and chills.

Based on the snowfall, ski season typically begins at the end of November and lasts until mid-April each year, making this the perfect way to enjoy winter on Bear Lake , and even parts of spring.

The Beaver Mountain Ski Resort is just a quick drive from Garden City, Utah and Fish Haven, Idaho. By staying at one of our luxury vacation homes in the area, you can easily enjoy skiing Beaver Mountain just a short drive from your rental.

If you are new to skiing or just want a refresher course, you may book ski lessons at Beaver Creek . They offer kids’ lessons and adults’ lessons. You may also choose private lessons or group lessons if you want to save money and meet people. Adapted skiing lessons are also available for skiers with a range of disabilities. Start your ski trip right with a lesson or two so you may face the slopes with confidence.

Lessons provided by The Beaver Mountain Snowsports School are taught by professional instructors. They are members of the Professional Ski Instructors Association of America and the American Association of Snowboard Instructors. The school provides instructional options for just about every skill level and age. Topics may cover downhill skiing, snowboarding, and telemark skiing. They will also teach about snow safety as it is always crucial to respect nature and snow.

You may also rent skiing equipment so don’t worry if you didn’t bring your own pair of skis and poles at the ski shop. If you live nearby, you just may be tempted to buy a season pass after you get to know the ski area and the mountain. Locals keep coming back to “skithebeav” and to enjoy the Bear River Mountains.

Using the Ski Lifts

If you are a new skier, be sure your instructor teaches you how to use the ski lift. Sometimes beginners are a little intimidated by ski lifts, but with a little instruction you will pick up on it. While riding the lift you also get a chance to admire the scenery. The area is known for its gorgeous unspoiled landscape.

The Bear Lake area as well as its surrounding mountain range contains over 350 miles of groomed snowmobile trails . Just be aware that Idaho law requires you to register your snowmobile so you may want to plan in advance if this is something you would like to do. You can rent snowmobiles, ATVs, and other recreational vehicles at several stores in the area and they may also help you figure out licensing and registration requirements.

Garden City’s biggest draws are the magnificent Bear Lake and its pristine beaches. If you are looking for a beautiful beach, you can’t go wrong with Garden City Park . A charming boardwalk leads you to the beach, where you may enjoy spectacular views of the turquoise lake and surrounding mountains. The beaches are sandy and a nice place to relax, walk, access the water, and maybe even attempt to build sand sculptures.

Boating enthusiasts will enjoy the Bear Lake State Park Marina, which is at the north end of Garden City and the city is near the expansive Bear Lake State Park . The marina is open year-round and a great destination for people who enjoy water activities, including water skiing, kayaking, stand-up paddle boarding, swimming, fishing, and sailing.

If you are a keen golfer, you are probably always looking for a place to enjoy a round. Garden City’s own Bear Lake Golf Course on Clubhouse Drive is your spot. This 9-hole regulation course was designed by William H. Neff, ASGCA, and opened in 1971. The beautifully manicured course and charming surroundings make for a day to remember.

If you prefer mini-golf or even disc golf, Garden City’s Bridgerton Adventure Park is the place to go, if you don’t have your own discs, they can provide a set. Other fossils found may include gar, stingrays, pike, shrimp, diplomystus, knightia, amia, paddlefish, and even turtles, crocodiles, bats, birds, ancient rhinos and camels, and primates.

The Paris Ice Cave is open July 1 until the end of the summer season and located about 15 miles north of Garden City. Another option is the Minnetonka Cave also about 15 miles away from Garden City. You may rent skis and snowboarding equipment if you don’t have your own.

Fishing and Ice Fishing are among the most popular activities in Bear Lake. The area boasts a record breaking trophy cutthroat trout fishery where a fisherman actually broke the world record by catching a 19 pound cutthroat. Peak fishing season runs in January and February.

Due to Bear Lake’s history with the Oregon Trail, anyone interested in American history will want to visit the Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Montpelier, Idaho. While you are at it, if the old west fascinates you try visiting the Butch Cassidy Museum . In case you are unfamiliar with the Montpelier area, Idaho is just a short drive north of Bear Lake.

The interactive exhibits and exhibitions give you a chance to learn what it was like to be on the Oregon Trail. While the center focuses on the Oregon Trail it also contains information and insights about the journey people took on the California Trail. If you’re lucky you may even get a chance to catch a show at the community theater.
